See the piece Ten (10) Reasons to Oppose Ikea-Red Hook. Among other things, if it gets built, it will contribute not just to additional congestion on the already stopped-up Gowanus Expressway but to heavy traffic in Red Hook's streets. Take a look at the press release announcing the Plaintiffs' reply memorandum in the Ikea-Red Hook case. Plaintiffs report on misrepresentations by Ikea and they present contrary engineers' data. Get the whole story on the blog www.BigCitiesBigBoxes.com.

The suburban business models of Wal-Mart and Ikea are not different, even if there are small differences in their labor practices. This business model, which has made the founder of Ikea one of the richest men in the world, is to crush the competition by building stores so close together that no other retailer can survive. That is not good news for New York City.

While I generally believe that the development tha...

While I generally believe that the development that Greg O'Connell has brought to Red Hook has been positive for the neighborhood and he saved many great buildings, he is not the altruistic developer that he's portrayed as in the recent article.
